Abstract

Subject. Analysis of the dispersion composition of carbonized suspensions is an important and relevant area of assessment of the efficiency of sugar production processes. This is because the presence of finely dispersed solid phase particles in filtered juices leads to a decrease in sugar quality and yield. Purpose. The purpose of the work is to establish correlations between the particle size distribution of carbonized suspensions and the intermediate products obtained from them (filtrates and decantates), as well as to propose normative values for the particle size distribution of these suspensions. Methods. Laser diffraction was used to determine the particle size (dispersibility) of carbonized suspensions and filtered intermediate products. The turbidity (quantitative assessment of the solid phase particle content) of suspensions and intermediate products of sugar production in mg/dm3 units was determined using a modern portable turbidimeter AQ4500 (Orion, USA). Results. A summary was carried out of existing data on the particle sizes of carbonated suspensions. Under production conditions at eleven sugar factories in Ukraine, the dispersibility of carbonated suspension particles was studied before and after their separation. Also turbidity was determined of these suspensions, decantates and filtrates obtained from them. An increase in size of solid phase particles in carbonated juice filtrates was found compared to unfiltered suspension. It was caused by finely dispersed solid phase particles of the sediment layer, which partially pass through the filter cloth, aggregate (enlarge) on its reverse side, and then enter the filtrate. Recommendations are given for the approximate ranges of standard particle sizes for carbonated suspensions in sugar production. Scope of results. Sugar enterprises will receive data on the objective values of the particle size distribution of carbonized suspensions before and after their separation, as well as recommended values for the normative indices of particle sizes that ensure the efficiency of the technological process of suspensions separation.
